Wake me Up at 3 a.m.

The customer walked out of the glass door feeling satisfied of the books she just bought. I couldn't be happier seeing a satisfied customer. I turned and looked around the empty shop. Just me and the books. Alone at last. It has been a busy day for her. Customers were keep coming in without giving her even a pee break. If this continues, she might need to find a worker to help her with the shop. She walked to the cashier counter and saw her phone. My goodness. I don't know how many messages he sent me since morning. I did not respond at all. He must be mad. She took her phone and unlocked it. She was too surprised that he had not sent any messages since morning. It was half past 12 in the noon. She was worried. What could have gone wrong? He don't normally do that. She sat on the chair at the cashier counter wondering if she should start the conversation.

After a few silent minutes, she realized he did not hug her good bye that morning. He did not give her the usual dosage of kisses. Right now her mind was going haywire thinking what went wrong. She gathered her guts together and dialed his number. It was ringing.

Scarlet: Hey baby, are you there?
Jim: Yeah. Whats up?
Scarlet: Are you okay?
Jim: Yeah. I am busy right now.
Scarlet: Alright. Bye then.
Jim: Bye.

Scarlet cannot feel worst than this. Jim has never did this to her in years. There was clearly something was going wrong somewhere. She decided to sit down and take her lunch instead of stressing herself about Jim. She took out her sandwich when a man in his late fifties walked into the shop looking for a law dictionary. It took Scarlet a while before she can sort where it was placed. Those were the rare kind of books people look for. After he left, a group of school kids entered. The whole evening went by without her realizing when the wall clock near the cashier counter ticked 7 p.m sharp. It was time for her to prepare to close the shop and go up to her home.

After waving goodbye to the last customer, she quickly pulled the metal bars down so that no more people walk in. She was in no mood of entertaining more customers asking for this and that. She needed some time alone for herself. She grabbed her phone, her keys and her handbag and walked straight up the stairs to her house.  It was nice to step into her warm home. It was so welcoming. She walked to the kitchen and made herself a cup of coffee and sat on the swing in her balcony. She didn't have to worry for dinner for that night. She need to reheat the sauce and cook the spaghetti and the dinner would be ready. After finishing her coffee, she prepared the dinner and Jim arrived right when she was setting the food on the dining table.

She was delighted to see him home. She quickly walked towards him and wrapped her arms around his shoulder. Jim gave an awkward hug and walked towards the bedroom.

"Jim baby, are you okay?"
"Yes I am okay."

Scarlet knew something was wrong. He was not even using the usual endearments while addressing her. She decided to remain quiet until he open up to her himself. It was of no point forcing things out of his mouth. It is better to let him cool down and allow him to take his own sweet time to talk about whatever that was bothering him. That night, they had a very silent dinner. They were not talking to each other. The food was tasty, but Scarlet lose her appetite. She left the table halfway and walked to the kitchen and washed her plate and left to bed.

What's wrong with me? Why am I hurting her? What did she do? Jim was arguing with his inner self. He didn't even know why he was behaving so harshly towards Scarlet, after all he loves that woman so much. He cleaned the dining table and decided to pamper her and make things normal again between them. He walked to the room and Scarlet was nowhere to be seen, She was taking her shower. He waited and waited and waited. She was in the shower for almost an hour now and there was no sound of movement in the bathroom. Jim began to get worried. He knocked on the bathroom door few times and Scarlet did not respond. His worry was growing and he knocked louder this time and no sound was coming. That's it! He broke into the bathroom and saw her lying down on the floor near the sink. Her hair was dripping wet. He lifted her up in his arms and laid her down on the bed. He took a towel and dried her and covered her with his t-shirt and boxers. She was breathing, Her forehead was swollen. She must have tripped and fallen down.

He decided to call the ambulance to take her to the hospital when she moaned and moved slightly.  Jim quickly shook her body and called out to her several times before she opened her eyes.

"Are you okay baby? Are you hurt? I'm so sorry".
Scarlet nuzzled on her bed tying to sit up.
"I am okay Jim. I fell down and hit my head against the commode".
"Oh dear, let me massage your head. I am so sorry".
Scarlet did not respond to him. She decided to rest her head on his lap and sleep. That was the best medicine for her at the time being. She somehow got to get a check up done tomorrow but for now, she better rest.

Jim woke her up at 3 a.m and whispered to her "come closer baby, I feel you are far". Scarlet moved towards him and buried her face into his chest. He woke her up again at 7 a.m because they needed to get ready for work. Once again at 7.15 a.m to give Scarlet her breakfast. It was nice to have breakfast in bed once in a while. She was tired as hell but she listened and felt every word he was saying.  He asked if she slept well. He apologized for waking her up at 3 a.m. Scarlet said "It's okay", despite the fact that was what she loved the most about him.
